Dejavu

I was rightly chastised for not blogging lately, but like my friend katiebod, I hate to post about the bad things.

The verdict is in and conclusive after 11 months of not quite right for Miss Megan, she does have Wobblers Syndrome. On Monday she had a myelogram which showed compression in two areas of her neck (C3-4 and C6-7 for those who want the specifics). I'm still waiting for the recommendation of one of the foremost experts on the syndrome. If he thinks she is a surgical candidate we'll decide whether or not to proceed with surgery. If she does have the surgery, it will be done in Kentucky and she will be there for 2-3 months for rehab.

So here's what this means -- Megan may or may not be treatable to riding soundness. If she is, she will not be an event horse -- it would likely be the jumper ring or dressage arena at best. Megan MAY be a candidate for breeding, but it's playing the odds that her condition is environmental rather than genetic. You wouldn't really know the answer until her first foal was riding age... and let's face it, I'm not sure I could raise one to find out it had the same issues. Megan is not in pain per se and would be very comfortable as a pasture pet -- surgery or no surgery.

No decisions yet, but lots of sadness. Unfortunately, the myelogram proved very hard on her and she has a very sore neck and is a very unhappy, uncomfortable pony at the moment. It's weird to so quickly go from riding every day to being grounded and treating an ailing pony.

All of the Brady family animals saw a vet this week and Lily got the go ahead to start into a training program. She'll have to step up to the A-team over the next few months and she has some mighty big hooves to fill. I still need a few weeks to process the sadness over Megan and make some decisions there, but it is nice to know that Lily is waiting to lighten my heart and carry on.
